NPCs, Gangs, Vehicles and Starships

NPCs

NPCs suffer harm differently than PCs do, but in Mass Effect: Rebirth, that damage can scale according to how “hard,” skilled, trained or just plain dangerous the NPC is. For reference:

When an ordinary NPC suffers…

  • 1-harm: cosmetic damage, pain, concussion, fear
  • 2-harm: wounds, unconsciousness, bad pain, broken bones, shock, likely fatal
  • 3-harm: 50-50 immediately fatal, otherwise terrible wounds, shock, death soon
  • 4-harm: usually immediately fatal, sometimes mangled and ruined, waiting to die
  • 5-harm and more: fatal and bodily destructive

When a “lieutenant”-grade NPC suffers harm reduce the harm by 1 on the scale above for purposes of consequences only.

When a “captain”-grade NPC suffers harm reduce the harm by 2 on the scale above for purposes of consequences only.

When NPCs suffer shock, they are unable to act for one tick in combat per point of shock received.

Gangs

Gangs in Apocalypse World already scale by size.

  • A Gang with members equipped with personal shields has a number of shield levels equal to the number of gang members so equipped. Only when all shield levels are depleted will the gang start taking damage.
  • When a Gang suffers more than 1-shock, reduce the gang’s effective size by 1 for 1 tick in battle.

Vehicles and Starships

Vehicles are machines capable of being driven or piloted by one or a small handful of people, and are usually planet-bound. Vehicles operate on the same scale as characters do, and so their weapon statistics, if any, reflect use against people and other vehicles. The amount of harm that a vehicle has suffered has the following effects:

  • 1-harm: cosmetic damage. 0-harm can blow through to passengers.
  • 2-harm: functional damage. 1-harm can blow through to passengers.
  • 3-harm: serious damage. 2-harm can blow through to passengers.
  • 4-harm: breakdown. 3-harm can blow through to passengers.
  • 5-harm and more: total destruction. Full harm can blow through to passengers, plus they can suffer additional harm if the vehicle explodes or crashes.

Starships scale in a manner similar to gangs, but only in relation to other starships. Starship weaponry used against ordinary people will simply vaporize them in most circumstances. Starships have three size categories: small, medium, and large. Much like gangs, when a starship attacks another starship, it inflicts +1harm for every size category larger it is, and -1harm for every size category smaller.
